ACADEMIA-INDUSTRY INTERACTION
For
enhancement of Academia-Industry Interaction, INAE has instituted the
following two schemes.
(a)
AICTE-INAE DISTINGUISHED VISITING PROFESSORSHIP SCHEME
(b)
INAE-AICTE
DISTINGUISHED INDUSTRY PROFESSOR SCHEME
AICTE-INAE
DISTINGUISHED VISITING PROFESSORSHIP SCHEME
Preamble
The Indian
National Academy of Engineering (INAE), founded in 1987 comprises a
Fellowship of the most distinguished engineers, engineer-scientists and
technologists of India and abroad from the entire spectrum of engineering
disciplines. It is a peer body of engineering professionals with the aim to
promote and advance the practice of engineering and technology, related
science disciplines and their applications to problems of national
importance. It also encourages inventions, scientific investigations, and
research in pursuit of excellence in the field of engineering.
Activities of
the Academy include, research projects, pilot studies, technical education,
fellowships, recognitions and awards and programmes on issues of technology
policy and overall development for the benefit of the society and other
benefactions.
It has long
been felt that there is a need for active linkages between industry and
engineering institutions which not only enrich the curriculum contents but
also add another dimension to the existing systems of continuing education
programmes, extension lectures and consultancy by faculty. Technology
developed through academic and R&D institutions generally falls short of the
needs of the industry for design and manufacture of new products and for
engineering services to meet the demands of the customers and challenges of
market competition. This gap can be narrowed down through a coordinated
approach ensuring closer interactions among industry, R&D institutions and
the academia, through institutionalized mechanisms. Active programmes should
be established for regular visits of experts from industry to address
students, academic and scientific staff and to spend a few days at campuses
for participating in teaching or research.
The Indian
National Academy of Engineering (INAE) launched a Distinguished Visiting
Professorship (DVP) Scheme jointly with AICTE in 1999. The Scheme envisages
promotion of industry-institute interaction by facilitating the
dissemination of knowledge through the expertise of experienced and
knowledgeable persons from industry to integrate their rich industrial
experience with technical education. The Scheme has received very
enthusiastic response from industry and engineering research institutions
over the years.
Thirteen Industry Experts
were selected during the year 2000; eighteen each during the years 2001 and
2002; fourteen during the year 2003; ten during the year 2004; thirteen
during the year 2005; fourteen during the year 2006, fifteen during the year
2007, eleven during the year 2008 and 18 during the year 2009 by a high
level selection committee of experts from Academics, Industry and
representatives from AICTE and CII.

INAE-AICTE
DISTINGUISHED INDUSTRY PROFESSOR SCHEME
The Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) launched a
Distinguished Visiting Professorship (DVP) Scheme jointly with AICTE in
1999. Under the subject scheme specialists from industry and research
laboratories deliver lectures in the academic institutions as Visiting
Professors. The Scheme envisages promotion of industry-institute interaction
by facilitating the dissemination of knowledge through the expertise of
experienced and knowledgeable persons from industry to integrate their rich
industrial experience with technical education. The Scheme has received very
enthusiastic response from industry and engineering research institutions
over the years.
Based on the success of this scheme, a new scheme – “INAE–AICTE
Distinguished Industry Professor Scheme” has been launched during 2007 in
the reverse direction wherein Faculty from engineering institutions, who are
Fellows of INAE, will interact with the engineers in industry and get
acquainted with the latest technologies and use theoretical knowledge for
solving ‘real life’ problems encountered in industry. Under this scheme,
Faculty from engineering institutions will spend some time in industry to
contribute to the Industry as well as gain exposure to the industrial
environment/requirements. The
Royal
Academy of
Engineering, UK has also
such a similar scheme called “Industrial Secondment Scheme” which has proven
to be a success.
During the course of teaching engineering at under graduate
and postgraduate levels it is desirable to correlate theoretical knowledge
with ‘real life’ practical problems encountered in industry. For engineering
faculty, this would provide the opportunity to learn about the
State-of-the-Art technologies and get exposure to current industrial and
commercial practice. This would make the teaching relevant to the industrial
realm and add to the realism of the courses taught in engineering
institutions. The interaction with captains of the industry will lead to
bringing new and innovative ideas, thereby enhancing credibility of the
teaching imparted at the institution.
In turn, the engineers in the industry will benefit by being
exposed to the latest concepts and research inputs for troubleshooting and
development of new processes, products and technologies. The faculty can
enhance and update the basic theoretical knowledge of the engineers in
industry by interacting with them, solving problems and conducting short
courses relevant to the concerned industry. The advanced research and
technological inputs given by the visiting faculty can be thus gainfully
utilized by the industry. This can initiate the development of longer-term
relationships between the institution and the industry, by way of joint
projects, joint student practical training programmes, research and
consultancy contracts, donation of equipment and software to the institution
and placement of students.
OBJECTIVE
The Industry Professor under the scheme will:
-
Interact with the
engineers in industry and get acquainted with the latest technologies and
use theoretical knowledge for solving ‘real life’ problems encountered in
industry
-
Conduct short seminars/
lectures at the industry
-
Initiate joint projects,
student training programmes and explore the possibility of research and
consultancy collaborations between the industry and the engineering
institution
-
Recommend suitable
modifications to the curriculum at the engineering institution.
OPERATION OF THE SCHEME
The Industry Professor will associate with the industry for a
short period of 1-2 months during summer. Initially, ten vacancies are
proposed. He will be considered to be on duty and therefore will draw his
salary during the period. Besides the cost of air travel, he will be
entitled to honorarium of Rs.30,000/- per week.
This honorarium will be paid to the Distinguished Industry
Professor by the interested Industry and INAE on a 50:50 basis.
